Technical

The ‘Technical Section’ is a collection of items ranging from brief descriptions to detailed instructions on how to carry out various service and repair jobs. Also included are various sets of data tables which should be useful.  Here you will find practical advice plus some tips which don’t appear in the service manuals.

It is hoped that this information will be of use to the seasoned mechanic as well as giving encouragement to those who would like to work on their cars but perhaps lack the confidence or experience to get started.  Many jobs, changing a water pump for instance, seem a little daunting but are quite straightforward if approached in an orderly fashion.

Very few special tools are needed to work on a Minor, a good set of ring and open-ended spanners in AF and Whitworth sizes plus some decent screwdrivers, assorted grips and pliers and – yes, a hammer or two are all that’s needed to perform a multitude of jobs.

A modest socket set is very useful of course and it must be stressed that the hammer should only be used on suitable occasions and then with restraint.  The best tools to have are sympathy for the vehicle/component being worked on and a genuine desire to achieve excellence.

Practical items in this section are gleaned from various sources within the Dorset MMOC and are  original works based on practical experience rather than copies taken from manuals.  Other items are reproduced with credits to their originators. Contributions, especially if illustrated, are invited from readers who would like to share their knowledge of the many and varied jobs associated with the upkeep of elderly vehicles.

The items have now been split into three categories: Instructions, Reference and Articles

If you have any suggestions as to info we could include on this page (copyrights permitting!), please let us know.
